It has been said that after the 1909 fire all that was left of the Birely Tannery was the first floor stone. It was said that the whole creekside facade was likewise stone. But check out the photo after the fire in 1909 and photos today. It clearly shows that a substantial portion of the building was restored. Newspaper articles immediately following the fire reported an amazement that the Birely's were able to restore their buildings to operating order very quickly. This is also evidence, the building was not rebuilt, but rather RESTORED.
