It has been incorrectly asserted that after the 1909 fire, all that was left of the Birely Tannery was the stone foundation. However, check out the photo after the 1909 fire, and compare it with more recent photos. They clearly show that a substantial portion of the building was restored. Newspaper articles immediately following the fire reported an amazement that the Birely's were able to restore their buildings to operating order very quickly. This also evidences, the building was not rebuilt, but rather RESTORED.
